Pension Carry Forward of Unused Allowance

Carry forward lets you use annual allowance you did not fully use in the previous three tax years, on top of the current year's allowance. It is what makes a larger than usual contribution possible without an annual allowance charge.
It is not a separate pot you claim. It works inside the annual allowance calculation, provided you meet the conditions and the years are used in the right order.
The Three Year Look Back
Carry forward draws on unused annual allowance from the previous three tax years. The current year's annual allowance is used first, and only then is unused allowance from earlier years brought in. HMRC explains the check in its unused allowances guidance.
Because the window is a rolling three years, allowance that is not used eventually drops out of reach, and the oldest year falls away each 6 April. Mapping what remains across the window is part of our director contribution work.
The Scheme Membership Condition
You can only carry allowance forward from a year in which you were a member of a registered pension scheme. Membership is enough, you do not need to have contributed in that year, but if you were not a member at all then there is nothing to carry forward from it.
The statutory basis for carry forward is in the Finance Act 2004, which also sets the annual allowance the carried-forward figures are measured against.
The Order Allowances Are Used
The order is fixed. The current year is used first, then the earliest of the three carried-forward years, then the next, then the most recent. Using the earliest year first protects allowance that would otherwise expire soonest.
Getting the order right matters when only part of the available allowance is needed, because it determines how much remains to carry into future years.
Carry Forward and the Money Purchase Limit
Carry forward does not apply to the money purchase annual allowance. Once that lower limit has been triggered, unused money purchase allowance cannot be carried forward for money purchase contributions.
It is one of the few places where the carry forward mechanism simply does not reach, which is why the order of events during the tax year can matter as much as the figures.
